Weekly Update: 1st March 2024

This week saw my annual South Bristol Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair take place in Hengrove, with lots of young people coming to the event at the South Bristol Skills Academy to explore the next step in their career or education. In Westminster, I supported important issues to residents in Bristol South in Parliament, while also continuing discussions about the NHS as a member of Labour’s health team.

Campaigning for trailer safety

Since I became an MP, I have raised the issue of trailer safety in Parliament – after a child in Bedminster was killed by a runaway trailer in 2014, as the towing mechanism wasn’t secured properly. This week, as chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Trailer and Towing Safety, I met with supporters of the campaign to discuss the next steps to improving the safety of trailers on our roads.

Supporting jobseekers

Thursday was the eight edition of my South Bristol Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair, taking place at the South Bristol Skills Academy in Hengrove. It was another fantastic event. I always enjoy speaking to so many students and their families, while also catching up with local businesses and training providers. The day was a great success, with lots of students finding the first step in their career and accessing valuable training opportunities.

In my role as a member of Labour’s health team, I had a range of meetings with NHS staff and healthcare experts looking at examples of best practice in the health service, and how we can adopt this throughout the NHS. I spoke with staff about the importance of patients being able to see their regular GP, and Labour’s plans to help them achieve this, while also exploring the work being done to prioritise patient safety.
