On 25 September, the Government announced its landmark Pride in Place fund which will help to regenerate disadvantaged areas that may not have seen significant investment for some time.

Alongside the funding come new powers for communities to take back community assets that have fallen into disrepair or which risk closure and to block nuisance businesses like betting shops and fake barbers.

I am delighted that the middle super output area of Hartcliffe has been chosen as one of the neighbourhoods which will receive up to £2 million investment every year over the next ten years, allowing for sustained and planned investment. This is the kind of change that electing a Labour government brings – change rooted in our communities and with social justice at its core.

The Government has made clear that local people must be in the driving seat when it comes to the allocation of this funding. In the coming months, I will be getting in touch with residents across the area to hear their views and ideas about how this money should be spent. Their voices must be at the heart of this programme. Their priorities should be first and foremost.

I will also be engaging with the Government and Bristol City Council so that the investment from this scheme can have the maximum impact and to ensure that local people are the engine of change.

Communities like Hartcliffe have been neglected for too long. Their views and needs have too often been ignored or belittled. With the Pride in Place fund, we have a unique opportunity to bring about real change. I will be working to ensure that local people sit at the heart of that change in the years to come.
