This week, Professor Lord Darzi published his independent investigation into the state of the NHS.
The report provided a raw and honest assessment of the crisis in the NHS. It laid bare the damage done to the health service under the previous government, and the failures experienced by patients on a daily basis.
From my own experience working with some great colleagues in the NHS in Bristol, I saw first hand the terrible damage wrought by the reforms imposed by Conservative Health Secretary Andrew Lansley.
As an MP, I've seen the lasting effects of these failures. In Bristol South and across the country, we haven’t made the progress we should have in tackling key long-term conditions - such as diabetes, stroke, and obesity - with patients suffering as a result.
Now, as Minister of State for Health in the new Labour government, it is a personal honour to be working to repair that damage, delivering the recovery and reform the NHS needs.
Together with Secretary of State Wes Streeting and my ministerial colleagues, it is our mission to turn the NHS around. Working with staff, experts, and patients, this Labour government is determined to build an NHS fit for the future.
