This week, the Energy Secretary has agreed that the regulator can grant consent for gas to be produced at the Jackdaw field.

As I have said previously on this blog, our transition away from heating our homes with gas and the need to backstop our electricity grid with gas fired power for many years to come mean that we will need to make use of those gas fields in the North Sea which have already been approved.

As the Prime Minister said at Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday (21 October), this decision will allow us to build a bridge to a renewable future, because the resources that come in from this decision will allow us to invest in renewables, bring forward clean energy and, in this Parliament, substantially delink gas and electricity prices so that we can bring bills down.

The Government is clear that this decision is compatible with our legally binding climate commitments and I was proud to vote earlier this year to pass the Climate Change Committee’s Carbon Budget 7 into law, ensuring that the UK remains on track to reach net zero emissions.
